Bluefire Success Story: Government

Situation
A unit of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), via a contract with a provider of communication systems, support, and consulting to law enforcement, criminal justice, and government organizations, wanted a comprehensive data security solution for thousands of converged mobile devices. The devices were used on a daily basis by agency field personnel working and traveling around the world to transmit confidential, time-sensitive information to each other and to agency headquarters and field offices.
Vulnerability
The client was concerned about the integrity and security of the agency’s wireless network, as well as data stored on its converged devices, in three key areas:
- Potential attacks on the corporate network by would-be U.S. enemies
- Integrity of data on lost or stolen devices
- Use of devices across multiple private and public networks around the world
Solution
Bluefire Security Technologies recommended the following wireless device security solution:
- The Bluefire Mobile Security® VPN for installation on the devices, which were designed to access public cellular networks as well as a DHS-controlled data network.
The Bluefire Mobile Security® VPN was designed to launch automatically, migrate across transmission modes, and maintain a secure connection, without requiring user intervention. It also met stringent federal security and encryption guidelines.
Results
Initial deployment began in the 4th Quarter of 2005 and is operational today with high availability. Thousands of information packets are transmitted weekly between headquarters and 4,000 mobile personnel on a 24x7 basis. DHS has complete confidence that no security breach has occurred due to the Bluefire Mobile Security® VPN.
