Bluefire Products FAQ

Bluefire Security Technologies Products Frequently Asked Questions Navigation

General Questions

Why do I need Bluefire if I already use other security products including VPN, anti-virus software, and enterprise firewalls?

Conventional security products are not effective in defending the handheld because those products were not created to address the mobile platform’s unique size and design challenges. Without Bluefire Mobile Security®, traditional network security mechanisms remain vulnerable to attacks on the device itself, creating a gap in the enterprise’s mobile device and smartphone security strategy. Bluefire protects both the wireless devices and the data stored on the device.

VPN

For end-to-end wireless security, VPNs must be combined with device-level protection. Bluefire Mobile Security® VPN is an IPSec-compliant client that secures both wireless LAN and wireless WAN connections via the Bluefire Mobile Security® FIPS Cryptographic Module.

Anti-virus Software

Anti-virus software protects the handheld against known content-based attacks, but it doesn’t address other devices threats and vulnerabilities including denial-of-service attacks, information theft, port scans, port probes, spoofing, hijacked links, unauthorized access, and FTP file transfers. Bluefire interoperates with leading PDA anti-virus solutions including AirScanner, Computer Associates, F-Secure, McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro.

Enterprise Firewalls

Wireless handheld devices have extended the enterprise perimeter to mobile workers. The power and connectivity of today’s handhelds enable mobile employees to work outside the protection zone provided by enterprise firewalls and personal PC firewalls. This puts both the enterprise data stored on the devices and the enterprise networks to which these devices connect, at risk. Protecting the handhelds themselves is the critical first line of defense. Bluefire prevents unauthorized users from exploiting wireless handhelds as a backdoor to the enterprise and provides the critical foundation layer of security for smartphones and other mobile devices.

How is Bluefire Mobile Security® software deployed and managed?

Bluefire’s Enterprise Manager makes it easy and safe to deploy and administer handheld devices to large forces of mobile workers. It allows an organization to centrally control devices, define security policies, and deploy security rules through an easy-to-use, intuitive management console. Additionally, a scalable, relational database serves as the central collection and consolidation point for policies, profiles, and logs. Administrators can quickly access detailed event log reports, making it easy to track security events and isolate problems

What wireless protocols does Bluefire support?

Bluefire supports both WiFi and cellular networks.
