Motorola Makes Investment in Bluefire Security Technologies
Baltimore, MD September 28, 2004 — Bluefire Security Technologies announced today that Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), through its venture capital arm, Motorola Ventures, has made a strategic investment in the company. The company intends to use the proceeds from the financing to accelerate the development of its Mobile Firewall Plus suite of security applications. Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.
As more and more mobile device owners use their devices to connect to their home, office and Internet, they are becoming increasingly concerned that the data stored could be stolen or compromised. When installed on a device, Bluefire Mobile Firewall Plus offers a solid security foundation, including authentication (user password enforcement), encryption (of the data on the device) and an integrated mobile VPN and firewall, without consuming significant processor resources or memory on the device. This allows users to take full advantage of the device’s computing power with the confidence that their applications and data are secure.
“Devices that transmit, process or store data in any way – applications, e-mail, file storage, messaging or contacts – have potential security considerations that should be addressed,” said Warren Holtsberg, corporate vice president, Motorola Ventures. “We believe that Bluefire’s comprehensive security for small devices could assist with our ongoing efforts to provide security on mobile, connected devices, without compromising computing power.”
“We are excited to have Motorola as an investor in our company so that we can accelerate our development of security solutions for device users in the worldwide marketplace,” said Mark Komisky, CEO of Bluefire Security. “Bluefire and our investors recognize the growing demand for security on wireless and handheld devices and will continue to deliver the type of quality, comprehensive security that meets the market’s need.”
With this latest strategic investment, Bluefire Security has raised over $20 million in equity financing since its inception in 2001.
